I have read quite a bit about Dr. Morton Cooper in America who is a leading specialist in Spasmodic dyphonia. He uses his 'Direct Voice Rehabilitation' program and says that spasmodic dysphonia is related to misuse / incorrect use of your voice and by retraining the voice and using it correctly you can overcome SD. He does have quite a few good testimonials on his website and before and after audios.

It says on his website that his 'Direct Voice Rehabilitation' program suggests 4 intensive ...

I have just purchased this book from Amazon and so far have found it really informative and helpful. The author is a certified speech and language pathologist who herself had SD but was able, with a natural approach to treatment, to largely overcome the condition. The book does not pretend that there is an easy fix, but gives those patients diagnosed with SD, HOPE of significant improvement without the need for drugs, botox or surgery.

I will be starting the exercise regime listed in the ...

Botox injections

I tried to post this as a reply to the existing post on botox injections but the system doesn't let me.

I was told that the NHS in Dorset does not provide botox injections because of the cost - which can be pretty devastating if you have moved here from Sussex which does. They only offer speech therapy for which there is a long waiting list.

I presume it varies from NHS trust - part of the post code lottery.

Does anyone know what the cost would be privately ?

Its was good to find this forum as sd by its nature makes the sufferer very isolated.

I was diagnosed withh adductor sd in 2004 and had a course of 3 botox injections. The first gave me a good voice improvment but the next 2 left my voice weak for several weeks and there was little improvement. I have since just struggled with the voice.

I recently moved to the South Coast and my voice continued to weaken. I saw my doctor about the problem who referred me to a consultant who said ...

This software that shows your pitch in real-time in a way that most people understand. It shows your pitch as a moving line on the musical staff. There are notes above the staff that light up as you hit them. The side bar also shows the note and the volume.

As opposed to most other real-time pitch software, the display makes it easy to know what pitch you're on. The cost is $19 but you can download and try for 10 times at no charge.

Free Breathing Test

Most of us with SD know the importance of correct breath support and any deficiency in this area may contribute to a 'poor voice'. Poor breath support seems a common problem with most of us with SD and hence we need to be encouraged to ensure that we always use correct support by way of diaphragmatic breathing. Take the free breathing test below to find out how good your breathing is...........

Closed mouth yawn

I have found that doing a discreet closed mouth yawn before you start to speak really helps lower your larynx and open my throat, then try and keep your larynx in that low position as you are talking. It seems to help me get my words about better as my throat doesn't seem so tense and tight, and I don't feel as if I am being strangled by my own throat!

For example you could try this exercise:

Keep the feeling that you are just starting to yawn and say the work "dumb". Place ...

I had four injections in total, every three months for about a year last year, but each time they had extremely varied effects.

The first injections I had, I remember being extremely nervous as I had no idea what to expect! but within a minute it was over. I couldn't talk at all for the first few days, then I could barely manage a whisper for about 4 weeks. But when my voice did come back it was really good until my next injections. It felt strong with no spasms or breaks.

The second ...
